Wanstead is a suburban area of North East London in the London Borough of Redbridge. The area has a village feel and the name is from the Anglo-Saxon words meaning “settlement on a small hill”. Wanstead holds many open spaces including grassland such as Wanstead Flats and Wanstead Park which forms part of Epping Forest. The main road through Wanstead is the A12 which includes many pubs, restuarants and independent retailers. The area consists of a range of property generally built between 1870 and 1910.


The nearest London Underground stations are Wanstead and Snaresbrook which are both on the Central Line. The closest railway stations are Wood Street in Walthamstow which gives direct access into Liverpool Street and Leytonstone High Road railway station. The main road through Wanstead is the A12. There are many bus routes that pass through Wanstead.


A notable landmark towards the northern edge of Wanstead is the former Wanstead Hospital site that is now a housing development. It is home to Wanstead Golf club which over the years has held many events in the Essex County calendar. Wanstead High Street is home to many fine restuarants and eateries, pubs and independent shops selling a range of goods.


Wanstead is home to a large comprehensive school, Wanstead High School. There are six primary schools in Wanstead: Wanstead Church School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Aldersbrook, Nightingale, Snaresbrook and St. Joseph's Convent school which is an all-girls private school.
